Made in NC: Emily Triplett

Perched on a stool surrounded by metal working tools, Emily Triplett turns a piece of gold over on a rolling mill to roll the metal down into a specific shape. She’s creating a set of gold hoop earrings, one of her favorite styles. Next, she will form the metal and hammer the surface, before finally bringing the jewelry to a high polish with sandpaper and plenty of elbow grease.

It’s all in a day’s work for Emily Triplett, a metalsmith and the owner of a handmade jewelry business based in Chapel Hill. She’s been working on her own from a studio attached to her house for the past five years. The mother of a seven month old, she spends about 20 hours a week designing and creating high quality jewelry.

Her goal is to create pieces that that fits into her clients’ everyday lives. She has a growing portfolio of work, ranging from earrings and necklaces to custom engagement rings.

“Hearing that people wear my necklaces every day or my earrings every day, to me that means they like it and it fits into their personal sense of style which is really rewarding,” said Triplett. “But it’s also so functional that it works in their personal style and is comfortable.”

Her work is featured in several boutiques, like Light Art + Design located in downtown Chapel Hill on West Rosemary Street, and craft shows throughout North Carolina.

At the beginning of her career, she would have never envisioned herself owning a jewelry studio. She planned on doing nonprofit work after graduating from the University of California at Santa Cruz with what she calls a “hippie degree” in community studies.

“I ended up getting pulled back to art,” Triplett said. “My mother was an artist. I’d always had art in my life, and it has always just kind of been where my passion is.”

Her transition to being a metalsmith started with a job offer from her friend who was a stop motion animation puppet maker. She worked on projects with foam and carved materials to create tiny aspects of the puppets. Painting or drawing never appealed to Triplett, and she soon realized her passion for working with her hands. She started taking jewelry-making classes and designing her first pieces.

“I’ve had a lot of different jobs in my life, and I always thought, as long as you’re passionate about what you’re doing, who cares if you change your job?” Triplett said. “I’ve always enjoyed the things I’ve done, but this is really sticking for me because it seems so ever-evolving. I can continue to design and continue to make new pieces and stretch myself to different areas, so it feels like it can be inspiring for a long time.”

Inspiration can be difficult to find, especially when working for yourself, she said. Aesthetically, she finds inspiration in modernist form and art deco jewelry. Her biggest source of inspiration is the journey of designing a piece.

“I think the challenge of designing and figuring things out is incredibly rewarding. I love that. I love to figure out how to make things very well crafted and designed.”

Taylor says, Emily of Emily Triplett Jewelry took my concept board and ran with it; the custom bands she created are so beautiful that I am now having her work on my own for my wedding!

Becky of The Wilding Collective wanted the florals to be works of art in themselves. They sure are!

So many custom made elements went into this shoot. Taylor tells us, Ele Annand and Beth Schiable combined their killer letterpress and calligraphy skills to create an invitation and place card set that is beautiful enough to frame. HAAND created a custom cake stand specifically for this shoot! Their work can easily transfer from centerpieces at a wedding right into the newlyweds’ home… Sweet Little Something listened to our needs for the cake and macaroons and gave all of it an extra dose of style.
